We all know the old African proverb, ‘it takes a village to raise a child’. Young mothers especially need real support when there is an unexpected pregnancy. But women are rarely offered constructive counselling about the life and death decision they are about to make.

Who is that village in Australia?  Jennifer Gurry, who leads the organisation ‘Diamond Women’, believes it’s anybody who reaches out a hand or offers a word of comfort to a woman who might be facing an unplanned pregnancy.

Jennifer says when ‘Diamond Women’ started six years ago, they saw a real gap in the marketplace for women who were unsure about their options. “We wanted to create a space where they could literally feel that support in a safe, non-judgmental way.”

For many women, that lack of support might be a financial element. They feel they can’t afford to choose parenthood and give this child the life it deserves. Other people feel like they just can’t do it alone.

“We actually have probably the best team on the whole planet,” says Jennifer. “It’s not just the qualifications which are broad and diverse. The team is actually working for us because they are passionate and committed about coming alongside women and being the village.”

All services provided by ‘Diamond Women’ are completely free. They have caseworkers, counsellors, and mentors from all walks of life to do the journey with women. In fact, the team actually rallied together so they could provide 12 months’ worth of baby goods completely free of charge.

“One woman found out she was pregnant and her partner told her, do whatever you want, but I don’t think this relationship’s going to work,” says Jennifer.  “We were able to step in send her a care package and we’re going to continue mentoring her to make sure she feels fully supported.”

Diamond Women’s caseworkers are designed to help mums connect to other services and make sure that their material needs are met. They can even set up a nursery for when the baby comes. There is wraparound support, and that’s what makes a village.

“There’s full community support, and that’s what we’re trying to create,” says Jennifer. “We’re not here to judge. We are a safe place. The women have free will, but when they are hurting, we care. We provide free counselling to help with trauma, so they can come out the other side much stronger.”

Jenny and her team are all about empowering women, and that’s what they are committed to as a team.

“We get to be the hands of feet of Jesus to these women,” Jenny says.
