Recently on Sunday Morning Together, Senior Pastors of King’s Church in Kununurra, Bruce and Terri Connell, joined us to share a message on communion. They emphasised the importance of examining our hearts before coming to Jesus, and the profound impact that has on the foundation of our faith.
Terri and Bruce have communion together every morning during their prayer time, and believe that it sets the foundation for their day. It’s a constant reminder of the sacrifice that Jesus made, showing the depth of His love for all of us.
‘He paid the penalty due for our sin,’ says Terri, ‘and He went to die on a cross willingly. Jesus was born to die for us. He had you and I in mind when He did that. And He says to take communion when we meet together to remember what He did.’
In Luke 22:19-20, we are given instructions on how to break bread and take the cup in remembrance of Him. ‘Today Jesus is reaching out to every person, saying that he died for you and He invites you to accept Him as your Saviour,’ says Terri. ‘We do that by being willing to ask His forgiveness for sins and to follow Him and read His word. He will totally forgive you. As far as the East is from the West.’
Jesus saves us from the coming judgement of sin because He wants us to join His family and be born again. In 1 Corinthians 3:10-11, it says that by the grace God, we lay the foundation as a wise builder but each one should build with care for no one can lay a foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
In Luke 6:47-48 Jesus describes one who hears His words and does them as a man who, when building his house, digs his foundation deeply and upon rock. ‘Whatever you do today, whatever you build in your home, your marriage, your family, your workplace or school, be sure to have Jesus as the foundation of your life so that you can succeed,’ says Terri.
The Right Foundation
Bruce and Terri believe that no matter how many thoughts, tasks or meetings we need to process in a day, if we base them on the foundation of a relationship with Jesus, we will succeed and do well. ‘Those foundations are certainly important.’
Communion is a symbol of what was poured out for us when Jesus gave His life. ‘It’s the reminder of the New Covenant poured out for the forgiveness of sins,’ says Terri. ‘For those who ask for that forgiveness and receive Jesus as their Lord and Saviour.’
