Robbo and Becci caught up with Dami Im who is beginning to tour again this year and has just released her new single, Lonely Cactus.

“I’m so excited to be back on tour!”, Dami says. “I love the audience and the feedback. It’s been like catching up with an old friend, it’s just really nice.”

Dami wrote her song, Lonely Cactus, during Covid last year. “A lot of us discovered new hobbies during that season, and cactus became my obsession”, she jokes. But the song has a serious message too. “When we’re alone it’s tempting to stay that way, but community is good for us. Sometimes I feel like I don’t need people, it’s a weird thing that you can want people and want to be left alone at the same time. I feel both of those things. I crave connection and alone time. I always want what I can’t have.”

It’s been a long journey for Dami since winning ‘X factor’, and she admits that while it’s been exciting, it’s also tough at times. “It’s a big learning curve”, she says. “I’ve had so many different experiences, and I had to learn how I wanted to do things. I had to figure out what I wanted my music to sound like what I wanted my audience to feel at my shows.”

Dami also says she found it difficult in the beginning, with no one to coach or guide her. “Once you’re signed to a label you work with a lot of different people. But no one ever really guides you through that. My friends and family didn’t understand what I had to go through. A lot of it was trial and error, trying different things and it took me a few years to find the right people and have more confidence in myself.”

Faith has also been a big part of Dami’s journey. “I had kind of a naïve faith. I thought I could change the whole world. But I didn’t know how or what to do. It was a combination of figuring things out, step by step with the right people.”

“Even within my group of Christian friends they all think differently. Some are content doing any kind of job and living their lives and some are more driven and have a calling in what they do. I had to figure that out. More success isn’t necessary as a Christian. It’s hard to find answers, but I always stay connected to God and my brothers and sisters in Christ. We need that Christian community to find the balance.”

Dami says one of the greatest lessons she has learnt is not to be afraid of making a mistake. “I would worry about making a wrong turn and that I would fail myself and God. But as long as you are walking with God and holding on to Him, He will keep correcting you and He will guide you.”

During the early years of her career, Dami was often inspired by Esther. “I love that God put her there for such a time as this. She was out there, in danger and still standing with such courage because she believed that God had called her to that place for a purpose. I wanted to be like that too”.

Among her many achievements, Eurovision stands out for Dami. “I’m very grateful for the experiences I’ve had. But I learnt that without faith in God, without that foundation of truth, everything is empty.”

Dami is currently working on her next album to come out this year and is excited to perform more live shows.
