Hope Heard in Afghanistan

Chaos and fear. This is the reality of Afghanistan today. The Taliban has again taken control of the nation. But, there are waves of hope.

Twenty years of freedom is now being threatened in Afghanistan, particularly for women and girls. With the fall of Afghanistan, it will only get harsher for the fledgling church that has already been operating underground. It’s a very frightening situation that Christians are now facing. There are very few chances for Christians to receive biblical teaching and encouragement outside of their homes. That’s where radio comes in. John Reeder, the Australian advocate for Trans World Radio (TWR) shares some encouragement with Neil on 20Twenty.

There are just over 200 underground churches in Afghanistan, and they have been able to hear messages of hope through Christian radio. Last year alone, TWR connected with 34.4 million people worldwide in over 300 languages.

In Afghanistan, TWR broadcasts in the local Dari language too. People are getting to know Jesus better, and they realize the significance of forgiveness and leaving the revenge in God’s hands. The testimonies are humbling, because people are responding to clear Bible messages.

“The testimonies we hear are incredible”, says John. “One man told us he enjoyed listening so much that he recommended it to some of his friends. One of them had a broken radio and borrowed one from a shop so he wouldn’t miss a program. He wanted to know Jesus better and prayed over the radio.”

“Another listener told us that radio programs prevented his father and uncle from carrying out a vengeance killing. Thank God. They listened to the broadcast realized the significance of forgiveness and leaving the revenge in God’s hands. As a result, they decided to forego their plans and forgive the man.”

“It’s wonderful, but it’s going to be very challenging in the future,” says John. “We ask listeners to be in prayer, especially to ask for God’s covering and victory. We pray for God’s Word to have an impact into the hearts and lives of those who are able to hear it.”
