We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way;and the Lord has punished Him for the iniquity of us all. Isaiah 53:6

Gareth shares some thoughts on this passage…

These days, when people refer to sheep, they often think of someone blindly following the crowd with no thought of their own. However, sheep are prone to wander off, and as this scripture tells us, so are we as humans. We think we know better than our creator and have gone our own way.

According to some, in Ancient Israel, shepherds would break the leg of the offending sheep, to prevent it happening again. Thankfully, our Heavenly Father is not like that. He does not force his will upon us, allowing us the freedom to make choices, all the while hoping we choose to follow. He is gentle, kind, loving and tender, patiently waiting for us to come back to his side.

Jesus is the Good Shepherd, and as his sheep, we can be confident that he understands and knows what we are going through. He’s been tested and tempted, abused and hated, known suffering, grief and pain, been an outcast, and the list goes on.

He bears our burdens and shares our sorrows. The fully human yet fully divine Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ.

There’s nothing wrong with being a sheep, just be sure you’re following the Shepherd.
