The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and discipline. Proverbs 1:7
Anthony shares some thoughts on this passage…
In general, people don’t like being told what to do. As the oldest child, I was personally driven to study hard at school, but as soon as mum told me to study, I automatically wanted to resist. Furthermore, we are often even more resistant in being told what to do when we don’t fully understand why or don’t agree with the why.
This is especially true when it comes to following God. We don’t like submitting without understanding. However, God often wants us to submit, respect, and obey Him first before He provides the understanding. This is why the writer of Proverbs indicates that the beginning of knowledge/wisdom starts with the fear of the Lord. When we chose to honour and follow God in our hearts and our lives, we are demonstrating the fear of the Lord. Not a fear that is scared of God, but one that acknowledges and respects that He is God. God rewards this humble attitude with wisdom, knowledge and understanding. However, if we don’t take God seriously at his word and despise His wisdom and correction as to the right way to live, the bible calls us a fool.
We often think that you must be smart and study hard to get knowledge and wisdom. But this verse can greatly encourage us as it shows us that wisdom and knowledge are available to anyone who respects and fears the Lord. Praise God!
