Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Deuteronomy 6:7
Adele shares her reflections on this verse…
As parents, we are instructed to teach our children about God. When my five children were little, I would bring God into our lives as we went about our day, so he wasn’t just a devotion in the morning. When I was gardening, we would talk about Adam and Eve; when we saw a rainbow, we would talk about Noah; when we went out on the water, we would talk of Jonah. Some of my most precious memories with my teenage children were on the 45-minute drive home from work. Some days we would listen to music or tell jokes, but other days we would talk about their life and about God. It was never a lecture; it was just chatting and embracing the opportunities as they arose.
When God is a constant source in our lives and hearts, we cannot help but talk about him. We cannot help but proclaim His goodness in our hearts and our lives – but we still need to be intentional with teaching and embracing opportunities. As 2022 brings my first granddaughter – I cannot wait to sit with her and share God’s love for her. When we love God with all our heart and soul and strength, He will naturally flow through us to the next generation. Our homes will carry his peace, and our hearts will carry his praise.
