For to us a child is born, to us a son is given, and the government will be on His shoulders. And He will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
Mandy shares his reflections on this verse…
This is a Christmas card verse, but we should be celebrating all year round!
God made a promise that a baby would be born in Isa 7:14, and He’d be ‘God with us.’ In Isaiah 9, God tells us more about this baby’s nature and character.
This child was ‘given’ and that makes Him a gift.
He’d be a political leader of government, so He’d be powerful.
His name. What a name!!! Wonderful Counsellor. Did you know that all political leaders have political counsels who give them direction, information and resources to do their job? This particular government leader would be His own counsel as well as provide counsel to everyone He governs.
Hold onto your hat…this child, now a man leading government…is Mighty God! Let me repeat that. Mighty God. Not just a man, but God.
This leader is the Everlasting Father. The eternal parent of us all. Not just a leader, not just God, but our Father, who will never, ever die.
He’s the Prince of Peace. In a world gone utterly mad, this leader’s very nature and character is absolute peace.
I love this verse.
