Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful. Joshua 1:8

Adele shares her reflections on this verse…

Have you ever been in a discussion where you know the Bible says something about the topic, but you cannot recall the verse or passage of scripture?  Or alternately, in a discussion where the Bible verse has jumped straight into your mind?  Joshua talks about keeping the Book of the Law on your lips – this means we need to know it – deeply, intimately.  Our knowledge of the Bible guides our lives.  When we linger in the word of God and commit it to our memory, we allow it to soak into the depths of us.

There is a difference between just reading the word and meditating on it.  It is easy to do a ‘tick and flick’ devotion in the morning and congratulate ourselves for ‘another day done’.  It is quite a different thing to take the time to linger over the words, to listen to God as he speaks to us, and to carry the words with us during the day.  Even the Pharisees could recite the Bible.  The difference is in our hearts, in allowing God’s word to penetrate our lives.   When we allow it to soak into our soul, it will change us.  When we allow it to change us, we will need nothing, for we will be following God’s plan for our lives and our treasures surely will be in Heaven.
