Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him. 1 Samuel 16:23
I often think of this verse when it comes to worship. I love anointed worship. A lot of music is great musically, and entertaining, and well written etc. But when worship is anointed, it can deliver people from demons! I think my musical choices over the years have changed from just listening to something that’s cool, to seeking after something that’s anointed. David had literally been anointed with oil, and the Holy Spirit was on him.
In 1 Samuel 16:13 it says, “So Samuel took the horn of oil and anointed him in the presence of his brothers, and from that day on the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David.” What was one of the pre-requisites for the anointing? In 1 Samuel 16:7 it says, “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.” It all comes back to the heart. David has been remembered as a man after God’s own heart. He made many mistakes in his life. But under the anointing, he cast out demons with his music, he killed Goliath, he lead Israel to many victories. Along the way he was always a worshiper. We have the Psalms as the basis for our worship music throughout the world. And it all started in the secret place. It all started as a shepherd boy who was faithful with a little, & God Granted him much. I heard a Casting Crowns song recently which said of David, “Your little shepherd songs are going to make the whole world sing.”
We’ve seen an amazing rise in the modern worship movement, and many people love the new sounds and songs that are available. I believe God is stirring the hearts of the people to be true worshippers. I get concerned when people tell me they can’t get into worship, it should be a part of our lifestyle to be worshippers. Our Sunday worship should just be the icing on the cake of our worship, but for many it’s the only time they worship. And worship is not just singing songs, it’s a lifestyle. And it all comes back to the heart. We need the anointing of the Holy Spirit. We need to have a heart of worship. We need to have a heart after God.
Lord, help me come back to the heart of worship. I need your anointing, I love your presence. Come and fill me with your Holy Spirit. I pray in Jesus name. Amen.
