Now he who supplies seed to the sower and bread for food will also supply and increase your store of seed and will enlarge the harvest of your righteousness. 11 You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God.
2 Corinthians 10:11
I heard a preacher recently say that most of the New Testament is advice to the churches because of the rapid growth of Christianity. It’s really helped my understanding of the letters to the churches, and to consider Paul’s heart when he writes as a father to his spiritual children. It’s amazing how relevant they are today to any Christian around the world, and how the Holy Spirit speaks through the living Word.
This passage has a whole section with advice on giving. The Corinthian church needed encouragement & correction then, just like we need it now. Paul encourages them & says in 2 Corinthians 6-8, “Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously. 7 Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. 8 And God is able to bless you abundantly, so that in all things at all times, having all that you need, you will abound in every good work.” I know some people don’t like getting advice on what to do with their money, people accuse preachers of trying to manipulate people into giving, and clearly some preachers are in error. I believe if people get uncomfortable hearing teaching about giving, it’s probably because their hearts are not in the right place about giving. Paul says in 2 Corinthians 9:5 to give, “a generous gift, not as one grudgingly given.” When you give your heart has to be generous, not one with a grudge.” Paul is genuinely encouraging the believers to be generous, and to be obedient in their giving. The truth is we can’t outgive God. He is Jehovah Jireh our Provider. He is the one who provides seed to the sower. He also promises to supply & increase our store of seed. He says, “You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion.” We are blessed to be a blessing.
The whole earth is the Lord’s and everything in it! We need to be wise with His money, & His resources. We need to return the tithe to him, and trust him. And if we are faithful with the seed that has been entrusted to us, he will give us more. And if we are faithful with the seed that has been entrusted to us, he will give us more. And if we are faithful with the seed that has been entrusted to us, he will give us more. And if we are faithful with the seed that has been entrusted to us, he will give us more. And if we are faithful with the seed that has been entrusted to us, he will give us more. And if we are faithful with the seed that has been entrusted to us, he will give us more. This could go on all day, I hope you get the picture. The kingdom of the world works on profit & loss. The Kingdom of God works on sowing & reaping. It’s a proven spiritual principle. And we have to trust God, despite what our circumstances say, despite what financial crisis the world is in, we need to put God first in our finances. I could spend all day sharing the financial miracles that have come through personally & for our church. And we give God all the glory, for he is a good, good father who gives good gifts to his children. We need to give God our firstfruits, not our leftovers. Give God what’s right, not what’s left. We need to seek first his kingdom in all areas of our life.
Lord, thank you for Paul’s teaching on finances. Help me to be faithful with what you have entrusted to me. Thank you for your generous gifts you have blessed me with over the years. You are always faithful. In Jesus name, Amen.
