If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. Matthew 18:15
To sin has been defined as to miss the mark. Like when an archer shoots an arrow & misses the target. Now we are all sinners, but Jesus is saying that we should be able to deal with the our sins and help restore people who are in sin back to living a godly life. The question with this verse is how & when do we go & point out someone’s fault. We often categorize sins as big sins & little sins. Big sins like murder, rape, violence etc. and we think of small sins like gossip, lying, anger etc. the truth is that sin is sin. And there are sins of commission & sins of omission. Some that are intentional sins & some sins that are avoiding what God wants us to do. We need to be wise & hear from God about the right way & the right time to go & point out someone’s fault. Some people are really judgmental & point out people’s sins all the time with a wrong spirit like the Pharisees. Some people don’t feel comfortable pointing out people’s sins because they think they shouldn’t judge people, but sadly when people aren’t corrected, they will probably go downhill & get worse. Jesus is challenging us to have healthy, accountable relationships with one another. The church is meant to be like family where we can be honest & truthful with each other in love.
This Matthew 18 passage needs to be put into practice in the modern church. First we need to go to the person. You don’t gossip about it, you don’t have to go to the pastor yet. Go to the person first. Then it says, “If he hears you, you have gained your brother. But if he will not hear, take with you one or two more, that ‘by the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established.’ And if he refuses to hear them, tell it to the church. But if he refuses even to hear the church, let him be to you like a heathen and a tax collector.” And even when you treat them like a heathen, it means you should love them & pray for them to get their heart right with God.
As a pastor over the years, I’ve seen too many people in sin, that I should have met with & gently encouraged them to repent. But as I get older, I realize the importance for this more & more.
Lord, give me your heart for your people. Show me who to speak to & what to say, In Jesus name, Amen.
