Guard against greed

“Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” Luke 12:15

Ever since the Garden of Eden we’ve been greedy for things. Greedy for the forbidden fruit, greedy for power, for bigger buildings, better clothes, the latest gadget, the fastest cars, the best toys and the list goes on. Jesus warns us in Luke 12 to, “Watch out & be on our guard against all kinds of greed.” This verse makes me want to do an audit on all of my possessions. Is there anything that I idolise? Jesus even throws out the challenge later in this passage, “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” We need to make sure the things we own, don’t own us. I think it comes back to generosity. Are we willing to be generous with what God has entrusted to us?

The other part of this passage says, “life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” This goes completely against the worlds way of thinking. The whole economy is based on buying & selling, the retail sector thrives on people buying the latest & greatest things. I remember reading a bumper sticker that says, “He who dies with the most toys, still dies.” I watched this tv show called, “Hoarders: Buried Alive.” About people who couldn’t throw anything out & their house was so cluttered they could hardly move! There is so much more to life than things! “life does not consist in an abundance of possessions.” We need to get back to a simple life. Jesus warns us not to be like the Rich Fool “whoever stores up things for themselves but is not rich toward God.”

Our Spiritual wealth is what counts. Eternity matters. Our relationship with the Lord is far more important than the things we own. This is a good warning to get back to the basics.

Lord, thank you for all you’ve given to me, may I be a good steward & become more generous every day. In Jesus name, Amen.
