According to the World Health Organisation, one in four of the world’s population will suffer from a mental health disorder at some stage of their life. Think about it! That’s a huge number of people.

As followers of Jesus, we are called to share His love and light with the world. However, it’s important to be sensitive in how we communicate with people who are dealing with issues that we may not fully understand.

Practically, there are a few things you could do to help:

Be supportive — Let them know that you’re there to listen and be available when they need someone to turn to.

Take some of the burdens — This could mean offering to help with things that they are struggling with or find stressful. How about making dinner, picking up groceries, helping with personal admin or assisting with transport arrangements.

Pray for them —If they are open to the idea of faith or not, you can still pray for their healing and believe that Jesus would reveal Himself to them.

Regardless of whether someone’s illness is mental or physical the best way to reach out to them is to show love. The smallest act of compassion can be life-changing and open the door for you to be a tangible expression of Jesus in the middle of their crisis. It might not look like you’re sharing your faith but sometimes being available to someone in the middle of their need is the best way to share Jesus with them.
