Lauren Daigle is an American Christian singer and songwriter. She has won numerous Grammy, Billboard Music, GMA Dove and American Music Awards, but you would never guess that her success was birthed through two years of illness that had her bedridden when she was just fifteen.
When Lauren was diagnosed with cytomegalovirus, everything she loved to do was taken away. She was no longer able to socialise with her friends, learn to drive or even attend her school graduation. The alienation and extreme change in her life opened the door to feelings of depression. Lauren recalls her mother’s words of encouragement. She said, ‘If you’re walking through this, God has something on the other side.’
‘I remember sitting in my bedroom by myself at night, and I would get on my knees and ask, “God, what are you doing this for? What is the purpose?”’
While Lauren doesn’t believe that God makes us sick and has these bad things happen to us, she believes that He works all things out for the good of those who love Him and are called according to His purpose, as stated in Romans 8:28.
Lauren’s mother suggested she start singing lessons to keep her from getting depressed. It worked; Lauren she fell in love with music and began songwriting. This encouraged Lauren to use her circumstances to become the platform to get her into the next season rather than allowing her circumstances to overwhelm her.
She also began to study the testimonies of people who had gone through intense times of adversity and overcame their hardships to become masters in their field despite the odds against them. During this process of searching for answers, Lauren came across a Bible verse in Proverbs that was to change the course of her life.
‘The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.’ Proverbs 16:9 NASB95
During her time in solitude, she began leaning on God’s Word because she knew there was something He was going to bring out of it on the other side. Lauren said God started showing her visions about music, stages, and awards. Lauren couldn’t comprehend it at the time because she was stuck at home. Then she began to realise that she would not be able to do anything in her strength but believed God would perform a miracle.
‘The path in my heart was to make music, but He directed every single step to get me to the place where I am,’ said Lauren. ‘That season of solitude, honestly, is a treasured gift that I would not trade for the world. Suffering can produce beautiful things. If you’re walking through a difficult time, keep pressing on, keep persevering. You don’t have to strive. It’s actually the strength of the Lord that will get you to where He has planned for you.’
This experience helped Lauren immeasurably as she launched her career. It was definitely not an easy path but had she not learned to persevere and trust God, she may have given up after being eliminated from American Idol three times. She kept trusting God’s plan, and success eventually followed. Lauren’s single, You Say was a breakthrough song that got her noticed. It was the longest-running # 1 song to appear on any weekly Billboard chart.
Since then, Lauren has used her platform as a musician to share the love of Christ with others. Her testimony serves as an inspiration to many who are struggling with their faith journey. Through her music and personal experiences, she reminds us that no matter what challenges we may face in life, we can always turn to God for guidance and strength.
As Christians, it is important to remember that our mission is to reach out to those who may not know Christ yet. By following in Lauren’s footsteps and sharing our faith with others through our talents and actions, we can make a positive impact on the world around us.
