Outgoing German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been in Israel on an official farewell visit to the Jewish state.

The Times of Israel reports, Ms Merkel laid a wreath at Jerusalem’s Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial, and urged the world to continue the fight against anti-semitism.

Ms Merkel said every visit to the memorial touches her to the core.

She noted that the crimes against Jewish people documented there, are a perpetual reminder of the responsibility that Germans bear.

The chancellor said she was moved by the fact that Israel eventually came to trust Germany and that her country remains committed to Israel’s security.

Israeli Prime Minister Naftali Bennett described Ms Merkel as “Europe’s moral compass”.

He credited her with forming an unwavering bond between Germany and the Jewish state.

More than 6 million Jews died in the Holocaust.
