Forgive Us Our Debts – Jeff Vines

Excerpts from Jeff Vines’ sermon:

First of all, we are all sinners.  But we also believe that God is a loving heavenly Father.  We don’t relate to him as an employee would relate to his employee, we relate to Him as a child would do to his Dad.

This Father loves us so much that He gives us parameters and He has the right to do that because He knows how we should best live, to give us the best possible life.  Just like when a father says to his little boy, ‘Don’t play in the middle of the road.’   He doesn’t do it to be the big bad cosmic boss, he does it so his kid won’t get hit by a car.

So, God says this is how I’ve designed the world and if you live within these parameters you’re going to have a good life.

Now, that doesn’t mean you won’t have problems.  Sometimes people see Christians and think ‘I can’t be part of you, you look happy all the time.’  [The truth is] we’re not happy all the time, we’re not.  We’re happy for an hour and a half on the weekends because [church] reminds us of who we are and where we’re headed.  But if you catch us during the week, we’re just like anybody else – if something bad happens, we get sad.  We don’t always express faith, and we struggle with God just like everybody else.

But we do believe that God’s Law is life, and as the Creator, sustainer of everything He knows how He made us, how we’re wired, how we’re designed.  If we violate the design, disintegration sets in.  So, we try our best and we use our will to live as God designed.

Continue watching (above) or listening (below) to Jeff Vines’ full sermon on what it means to truly forgive others, just as the way God forgave us.  It is not till we truly understand the weight of just how great our own sin is, and the price that had to be paid that we will be able to forgive those who have hurt us.  It is important to note that forgiving others doesn’t mean we have to stay in the situation causing harm.
