The Most Misquoted Verse in the Bible – Jeff Vines

There are many well-quoted verses that people think are in the Bible, but actually aren’t.   Have you heard any of these?

  • God helps those who help themselves.
  • Cleanliness is next to godliness.
  • Hate the sin but love the sinner.
  • Money is the root of all evil.
  • The lion shall lay down with the lamb.

However, there is an actual verse from the Bible that many people quote, especially to Christians, that is actually in the Bible is from Jesus’ sermon on the Mount:

Do not judge, or you too will be judged.
Matthew 7:1.

Unfortunately most times when people quote this verse, they are actually misquoting it because they don’t know what it actually means or it’s context.   It is generally quoted when people want to justify their sin in saying ‘who are you to judge me?’  Our society uses this scripture to mean that we should never negatively evaluate another person’s belief or practice – that we should never tell someone else they are wrong about anything.

Jesus actually does want us to discern right from wrong as long as it’s from a Biblical basis.   Jeff Vines unpacks the truth behind Matthew 7:1 in his sermon ‘Speaking the truth in love’.
