The ACT Government will pay for all abortion expenses for women up to 16 weeks pregnant from next year.

All territory residents including those without a Medicare card will be eligible to recoup their out-of-pocket expenses for an abortion.

The ACT has put aside $4.6 million dollars over four years to pay for the service.

The Territory’s Deputy Chief Minister and Minister for Women Yvette Berry said: “Improving the affordability of abortions and addressing any potential inequity in accessing abortion services has long been a goal of the ACT Government.”

“By removing the cost barriers for abortions, we are improving access to affordable and accessible health services across the ACT.”

Australian Christian Lobby Deputy Director Dan Flynn told Vision Radio claims of a cost barrier are just a cover story:

“All this nonsense about the affordability of abortions is actually just a cover for the promotion of abortion and the destigmatising of the killing of babies.” he said.

“Certainly we’re making submissions to the Legislative Assembly who have an inquiry currently into abortion in the ACT.”

The ACT expects to start paying all abortion costs from the middle of next year.
