Ash Barty’s Australian Open singles campaign is off to a winning start.

The women’s world number one claimed a comfortable win over qualifier Lesia Tsurenko on Night One of her home Grand Slam – asserting her dominance with a 6-0 6-1 score line.

Barty said she was pleased with her performance and her ability to adjust to the breezy court conditions.

“Overall, I felt like I was able to control the court with my forehand,” said Barty.

Fellow Australian John Millman claimed victory over 40-year-old Spaniard Feliciano Lopez, 6-1 6-3 4-6 7-5.

Following that match, on the very same court, Ajla Tomljanovic was beaten by 8th seed Paula Badosa, 6-4 6-0.

Earlier in the day – and hot off the back of his first ATP tournament win – fan-favourite Thanasi Kokkinakis suffered a straight-set loss to German qualifier Yannick Hanfmann, 6-3 6-2 6-3.

Over on Court 7, James Duckworth was defeated in a five-setter by Frenchman Adrian Mannarino, with the final score resting at 6-4 2-6 3-6 6-2 6-1.

But, it was Aussie wildcard Aleksander Vukic who really got tongues wagging, claiming his very first Grand Slam match victory over 30th seed Lloyd Harris in just under three hours.

He said he’s over the moon with his 4-6 6-3 7-5 7-6 win.

“I think it was one of the loudest atmospheres I’ve ever seen to be honest, and it was all for me, and all for the Aussies,” said Vukic, “I couldn’t have done it without them, and it’s a dream – it really is”.

In other matches, Rafael Nadal breezed through to the second round in straight sets over Marcos Giron, and Naomi Osaka had a comfortable first round win over Camila Osorio.
