Australian’s are being warned to leave Ukraine immediately, amid escalating tensions at the country’s border with Russia.

US President, Joe Biden is holding talks with key European and NATO allies amid concerns of a Russian invasion in Ukraine.

The United States has put 8,500 troops on stand-by but has not yet decided if they will be deployed.

NATO is putting additional forces on stand-by to counter Moscow’s military build-up in the area.

The alliance is moving ships and fighter jets to NATO’s Eastern European bases to be situated closer to Ukraine.

General Secretary Jens Stoltenberg says the alliance will respond to any deterioration of security.

“NATO is a defensive alliance, which does not threaten Russia or any other country,” said Mr Stoltenberg.

“But we will always do what is necessary to protect and defend all our allies.”

Tensions are heightening with Russia carrying out more training drills in the Baltic Sea.

Russia has also sent more military equipment to Belarus.

Family members of diplomats are being evacuated from Australia’s embassy in Ukraine, following in the footsteps of the US and the UK.

The Federal Government has upgraded its travel advice for the Ukraine to ‘DO NOT TRAVEL’.

It warns that commercial flights may be withdrawn at anytime as the potential for conflict along the Ukraine-Russian border rises.
