The latest book by Christian author Eric Metaxas details similarities between the US of today and pre-World War II Germany.
In Letter to the American Church he warns that the United States is fast approaching a dangerous cultural tipping point although he says it’s not too late to reverse course.
“It is the silence of the American church on a host of issues today that many people say, ‘Oh, that’s not a gospel related issue. I don’t want to be divisive. I don’t want to be political.’ It is that silence which directly parallels the silence of German Christians in the early 1930s which led to the satanic evil of the Nazi takeover of that culture where they crushed the church.”
The author believes if only another few thousand Protestant pastors had spoken out against the Nazis during their early days Hitler would not have succeeded.
“This [silence] was not biblical. This was not what God was calling them to do. But the church hesitated enough and kept silent enough for long enough for the Nazis to utterly take over and really do things so evil that we look back and we think, ‘well, that can never happen again.’
Mr. Metaxas told CBN News that he’s arguing in his book that exactly the same thing is happening again because of the silence of the American church.
He explains that cultural Marxism is infiltrating American society and advancing ideas like transgenderism in schools and Christian persecution.
“Breaking silence to make change takes courage and persistence.”
The author explained that what’s William Wilberforce had in his fight to end slavery in the British Empire.
When people told the Christian abolitionist he was being political, he replied he was simply doing what God commanded him to do — to be a voice for the voiceless.
Mr. Metaxas believes it’s time for more Christians to speak up for the unborn and against socialism, Marxism and totalitarianism.
His view is that they are gospel related issues and if believers don’t act, God will judge them.
He encourages Christians to run for school boards; to take their kids out of public schools and homeschool them; and sacrificially help those being persecuted by Big State, Big Business and Big Tech.
The author told CBN News American Christians fear offending people and being canceled by the prevailing culture.
He urges them to take courage and respond boldly before it’s too late.
“God will not hold us guiltless. God will judge us for our silence because our silence is wrong. God calls us to the battle. And if the church will understand this and will speak, we will avoid the horror that befell Germany. But if we continue in this, exactly what happened there will happen here. Time is very, very short.”
