California Governor Gavin Newsom has signed off on 13 new abortion and reproductive health bills.
CBN News reports the raft of abortion laws essentially codifies key parts of the Governor’s campaign to make California a national abortion hub.
Pro-life advocates condemn the move as “horrendous.”
They say the new laws not only remove all civil and criminal penalties in the deaths of newborn babies, but set the stage for Californians to add additional abortion protections directly into the state constitution.
Greg Burt from the California Family Council (CFC) says it “protects all abortion, for any reason, up until the moment of birth.
Earlier this month, the state launched a publicly funded $1 million website to promote its abortion services.
It lists clinics and links to financial help for travel and lodging and tells teenagers from other states they don’t need their parents’ permission to get an abortion in California.
CBN News reports that according to the Governor’s official website, the new laws he’s approved include:
SB 1375 allows nurse practitioners to perform first-trimester abortions without the supervision of a physician.
AB 1242 prohibits state law enforcement agencies from complying with out-of-state abortion investigations.
SB 245 essentially eliminates out-of-pocket costs for abortions.
AB 1666 creates immediate liability protections for California abortion providers when caring for patients traveling from areas where the procedure is now banned or access is narrowed.
AB 657 expedites licensure for health care practitioners that come to California to provide abortion care services.
SB 523 expands birth control access, regardless of gender or insurance coverage.
CFC President Jonathan Keller said, “Governor Newsom tells pregnant women California has their back, but only if they choose to end their pregnancies. This package provides NO care for women who choose to keep their children. Gavin’s not pro-choice; he’s no choice.”
California voters will decide next month whether to put the right to an abortion and contraception into the state constitution.
Proposition 1 would explicitly prohibit the state from denying or interfering with a person’s reproductive freedom in their most intimate decisions, which includes their fundamental right to choose to have an abortion and their fundamental right to choose or refuse contraceptives.
Pro-Lifers are fiercely campaigning against the proposal.
The CFC says: “Proposition 1 will enshrine the right to kill a baby up until the moment of birth.”
