Human rights advocate Christian Solidarity Worldwide is calling for the release of four jailed Catholic clergymen in the African nation of Eritrea.

It argues that there’s no reason for their arrests because they are legally permitted to operate in the country.

The Eritrean government won’t explain why it’s detained one bishop and three priests.

It’s suspected it may be because the Christian leaders were outspoken in their concern for citizens who are being forced to fight a war in the neighbouring Ethiopian region of Tigray.

Eritrean citizens of all ages are being rounded up to fight in Tigray.

In recent years the Catholic priests issued joint pastoral letters over the human rights situation and ‘injustices’ within the country.

They’ve also condemned the jailing of hundreds of Christians; the closure of more than 20 Catholic clinics; and the sale of goods looted from Tigray.

Premier Christian News reports human rights groups are appealing to Eritrea’s leaders to immediately withdraw their troops from Ethiopia and to focus on respecting and protecting the rights of its citizens,
