A Florida high school teacher has caused ripples by writing a Bible scripture in large letters in her personal parking space.
The New King James Version of the verse is one of the most widely quoted in the New Testament from Philippians 4:13:
“I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” (NKJV)
A Jewish teacher’s assistant says she was offended by the word ‘Christ’ on state funded property.
She formally complained that she felt the verse was attacking her as a Jew.
But no one else was offended by it and there are no plans to alter or remove the verse which is covered by the teacher’s car for most of the day when staff and students are at the school.
The school encourages students and staff to personalise their parking spaces with a quote, phrase or image.
It says the verse is in good taste and is not of a proselytising nature.
The Jewish Community Relations Council says it’s unlikely the parking space would constitute a violation of the First Amendment because it’s not related to the school curriculum.
