The Chief of the Australian Defence Force has apologised to the people of Afghanistan for any alleged wrongdoing committed by Australian soldiers.
A redacted report into allegations of war crimes committed by defence personnel has now been made public.
The document has taken four years to compile, examining incidents that took place between 2005 and 2016.
General Angus Campbell has revealed out of 57 incidents investigated, the inquiry found credible allegations in 23 cases which resulted in the death of 39 Afghan prisoners or civilians.
He says none of the alleged killings were in the heat of battle.
A special prosecutor will be appointed to investigate the claims and consider criminal action.
