Israel’s Tourism Ministry has launched a new initiative aimed at getting more Christian tourists involved in archaeological excavations.

It claims it’s good for the Israeli economy, Biblical understanding and supplying archaeologists with a steady flow of volunteers.

The concept’s been in practice in Israel since the 1960s when volunteers were recruited to excavate the fortress at Masada.

US travel companies actively promote ‘authentic archaeological adventures’ in the Holy Land.

Some offer hands-on experience at Jerusalem’s Temple Mount Sifting Project which has relied on volunteers for two decades.

Most tourists only spend a few hours or a few days at a dig, although students can stay for months to help their academic research.

Christianity Today reports archaeo-tourism is also actively promoted in Jordan and Turkey.
