A prominent Catholic bishop in Nicaragua will be put on trial while under house arrest in the latest clampdown on dissent in the Central American nation.

Bishop Rolando Alvarez was arrested last August after barricading himself in church property for several weeks.

Several other priests who were with him are now in jail.

The bishop who has long been a critic of President Daniel Ortega is accused of undermining national integrity and spreading false news.

Human rights organisations accuse the Ortega government of persecuting the Catholic Church.

The president has previously ordered the arrest of church leaders, claiming they tried to overthrow him during anti-government protests five years ago.

Premier Christian News reports he also expelled nuns, missionaries and journalists and closed down Catholic radio and TV stations.
