People power has prevailed in the US state of Maine where parents and other stakeholders in the town of Paris have ousted local school board members over their support for a new transgender policy.

It would have allowed school staff to keep students’ gender identities secret from their parents.

Students would have been permitted to enter opposite sex bathrooms and locker rooms based on their gender identity.

Following public outrage over the lack of transparency about the new measures nearly 700 residents called a special election for two board members who backed the policy.

A convincing majority voted them off the board.

The policy has been put on hold.

The Christian Post reports US schools are under increasing scrutiny over gender identity policies.

It’s been especially intense in Maine where a school worker secretly helped a 13-year-old girl’s gender transition.
