New York, New Jersey and Connecticut have all declared a state of emergency after the remnants of Hurricane Ida triggered deadly flooding.
Dozens of people, including a two-year-old boy, have been killed in flash flooding across New Jersey and New York City.
Intense rain and tornadoes have battered parts of the country’s northeast, with millions of households in Louisiana and Mississippi still without power.
US President Joe Biden says it’s unprecedented.
“More than 6,000 members of the National Guard have been activated in Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Texas and other states, to support search and rescue, and recovery efforts,” said President Biden.
Online footage shows cars submerged on highways and water pouring into subway stations and homes.
Central Park in New York City recorded its heaviest downpour on record, with 8cm in an hour.
