Thousands Killed In Massive Turkish Quake

A huge earthquake has killed more than 3700 people across Türkiye and Syria.

Thousands of people are believed to be trapped under rubble.

Search and rescue teams are working through the night in freezing temperatures to find survivors.

The magnitude 7.8 quake on Monday (February 6) brought down whole apartment blocks in Turkish cities and piled more devastation on millions of Syrians displaced by years of war.

It struck before sunrise in harsh weather and was followed in the early afternoon by another large quake.

Türkiye’s president Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called the quake the worst disaster to hit the country in the past 86 years.

Humanitarian support is being offered to people on the ground with organisations including UNICEF and Oxfam already in the country

Australia will send 10-million dollars in humanitarian aid to Turkey to help the recovery from a devastating earthquake.

Türkiye is urging Australia to send medical kits and search and rescue teams..

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has also offered condolences to the affected families.

The Department of Foreign Affairs says it is not aware of any Australian casualties but is monitoring the situation.
