A nuclear power plant in Ukraine has come under attack from Russian forces causing a building at the plant to come alight.

Zaporizhzhia is the largest plant of its kind in Europe.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister, Dmytro Kuleba, tweeted that the Russians were firing from all sides on the plant.

He had warned if Zaporizhzhia were to blow up, it would be 10 times larger than Chernobyl.

The plant’s spokesman said Russian shells were falling directly on the facility.

Ukraine’s State Emergency Service, says the fire broke out outside the plant’s perimeter at a training building.

Firefighters were initially unable to reach the blaze to extinguish it, as they were coming under assault from Russian troops.

So far, there has been no change to radiation levels.

US President, Joe Biden has been briefed on the fire and spoken with Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

President Biden earlier held a virtual meeting with QUAD leaders including Prime Minister Scott Morrison, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The leaders discussed the Ukraine conflict as well as the importance of keeping peace in the Indo-Pacific region.

Concerns have risen over Beijing’s relationship with The Kremlin – with Beijing stopping short of condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Australia’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Marise Payne, says Russia’s actions should not be supported in any way.

“To be very clear, any collaboration on this illegal, unjustified and unprovoked Russian invasion would be deeply concerning,” said Minister Payne.

“Similarly, we are concerned by apparent increasing cooperation between authoritarian regimes.”

US intelligence indicates China had knowledge of Russia’s plans to invade Ukraine – with Beijing asking The Kremlin to delay the assault until after the Winter Olympics.

Chinese officials have dismissed the claims as “fake news”.
