The US state of Missouri may soon withhold state funding from libraries that don’t enact policies to shield minors from inappropriate content.

The proposed new rule is being put out for public consultation.

Under the plan libraries that receive state funding must certify in writing that they will implement policies to ensure appropriate book selections for children under 18.

They need to promise that state funds won’t go toward buying explicit material and that age-inappropriate content won’t be displayed in children’s sections.

They’re also banned from hosting or promoting events that could be considered inappropriate for minors.

The Christian Post reports parents would help determine which library materials their children could access.

Libraries would provide an online portal for them to challenge specific titles.
