The American state of Utah has banned doctors from performing gender transition surgeries on children.

It’s also placed new requirements on the prescription of hormones and puberty blockers to children with gender dysphoria.

The Christian Post reports the move follows concerns about the long-term impact of such interventions as former patients express regret over surgeries they received as teenagers.

Individuals will be able to bring a malpractice lawsuit against providers for treatment they underwent as a minor if they no longer consent to a gender change.

State Governor Spencer Cox who signed off on the bill, noted that more medical experts, states and countries are pausing the permanently life-altering treatments.

They want more and better research to help determine the long-term consequences of gender transitions on children.
