What is Prayer?

Prayer is simply a conversation with God, and it’s one of our greatest rights and privileges.

‘My Father will give you whatever you ask in My name … Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.’

– John 16:23–24 NIV

When we pray, we can ask Him to meet our needs (or the needs of others). We can thank Him and praise Him, and we can make promises to Him.

The Bible tells us to pray about everything and anything, all the time (1 Thessalonians 5:16–18). When we pray, we open the door for God to work.

How should I pray?

Just talk to God, and remember to allow time for Him to talk to you, too. Everyone can hear God’s voice through the words of the Bible — that’s why it’s often called ‘The Word’. Some people hear God as an impression or strong feeling inside them, while others hear words, and many more realise God is speaking through their trusted Christian friends and churches.

How you talk to God is up to you. You don’t have to use big words, careful sentences, kneel, stand or do anything special. Just be yourself — because that’s how God made you.
