The Names Of God YAHWEH SHAMMAH

This is a very unique name and it’s particularly important because of its uniqueness and what it’s referring to.Ezekiel the prophet has some amazing prophecies about the nation of Israel and the Jewish people. Some people are very much aware of the chapters 38 & 39, in fact, some people aren’t aware that there are any other chapters in the book of Ezekiel at all!

Ezekiel 37 is an incredible chapter about the Valley of Dry Bones and often, Christians like this chapter and try to apply it to their own spiritual lives and how they can become dry and brittle and that the Spirit of God will prophesy over them and restore them to new life. That’s not what the chapter is about.

Ezekiel 37 is a national prophesy about the Jewish nation coming from a place of death and desolation and being brought back to life, being restored to a living national people once again, being reestablished in their ancient homeland and become a strong and powerful people. Is that a true prophesy? Yes it is; the Jewish people have come from the four corners of the globe, from near extermination after the Nazi Holocaust and they’re back in their land and they’re a strong people.

The last nine chapters of the book of Ezekiel talk about the final Temple that will be built. These last chapters are quite long and some would say tedious because they go into extraordinary detail about all the measurements of the temple, where it will be situated, what it will look like and in the very last verse of the very last chapter of the book of Ezekiel, the Lord gives another name to the city – the Holy city of Jerusalem where the final Temple will be built.

Ezekiel 48:35, “The city shall be 18,000 cubits round about; and the name of the city from that day shall be, ‘The Lord is there’”.

This particular name that God has used for Himself is specifically used in connection with the city of Jerusalem.

Why is this so important and why did God deem that this needed to be included in His Word to all people?

This name shows very clearly that God hasn’t abandoned Jerusalem like many seem to think, He didn’t leave it in ruins, He didn’t leave it for the rest of the world to use as it sees fit. No, He kept His Word and His promises, and He chose this city for His name. God promised to restore this city and to return it to His Jewish nation.

2 Chronicles 6:5-6, God is speaking…”Since the day that I brought My people from the land of Egypt, I didn’t choose a city out of all the tribes of Israel in which to build a house that My name might be there, nor did I choose any man for a leader over My people Israel; but I have chosen Jerusalem that My name might be there, and I have chosen David to be over My people Israel.”

Now we know that God chose Jerusalem before the days of Jesus, and we can see clearly that God has chosen Jerusalem as His own for the last days as well, because He calls Jerusalem ‘Yahweh (Yehov’ah) Shamma’…the Lord is there, in the book of Ezekiel.

Many times we’ve noted that our Christian forebears ignorantly severed the Jewish foundations of the Christian faith and by doing so, we lose so much knowledge and understanding. This has resulted in the habit of spiritualising everything about the Bible, even prophecies. Everything becomes an analogy, instead of something real and in that way you can make the Bible mean anything and everything and there’s no certainly or clarity in it.

If God places so much emphasis on something in His Word, should it be an emphasis for us also? If something is so important to Him that He would actually give it His name, shouldn’t it also be important for us?

The truth is that one day our Messiah is coming back to earth. For most Jews, they’re waiting for His first coming, but for believer’s in Jesus, we’re waiting of His second coming. When He returns He’ll be setting His feet on the Mt of Olives in Jerusalem and He’s going to establish worship there again in another Jewish temple. All the details and specs are outlined for us in Ezekiel chapters 40-48.

Why does He require another temple? I don’t know, but apparently He does. But just because we might not understand the necessity of a future temple doesn’t disqualify it, it just means that we don’t quite get it yet.

What is important however, is that we align ourselves with God’s Word. Some will say that this program is being political because there’s so much contention over the city of Jerusalem. That may be, but if God says it’s His, and He calls it by His own name and that He is going to establish His temple there, then God is also being political…which is His prerogative. If you read the Bible seriously you discover God has a very clear foreign policy that He won’t compromise on to please the UN or the individual. We are to conform to His Word, because He’ll never conform His Word to the world or to us.

This is one of the most interesting of God’s names, but there are so many of them. I’ve included a list of them at the end of these notes for you to peruse and perhaps use for further study. Each and every name shows yet another facet of the nature of our God and my list is certainly not exhaustive. Enjoy!
