DC Comics is causing controversy with their upcoming comic book series featuring Jesus Christ.
Instead of depicting him in the truthful manner, which is clearly explained in the Bible, the comic creates a new imagined reason why Jesus left the earth 2,000 years ago.
Mark Russell, author of the comic series titled ‘Second Coming’ explained the story line to BleedingCool.com: “An all-powerful superhero, named Sun-Man, has to share a two bedroom apartment with Jesus Christ. The conceit is that God was so upset with Jesus’ performance the first time he came to earth, since he was arrested so soon and crucified shortly after, that he has kept him locked-up since then.”
“God then sees this superhero on earth a few thousand years later and says ‘that’s what I wanted for you!’ He sends Jesus down to learn from this superhero and they end up learning from each other. They learn the limitations of each other’s approach to the world and its problems.”
What should our reaction to this series as Christians be? Should we be happy that the world is talking about Jesus? Or should we be outraged that the Creator of the universe is being treated in such a blasphemous way?
“If we’re going to talk about Jesus, it’s got to be in a respectful and reverent way – the way in which He deserves to be talked about. And that’s not what happened with this comic series.”
Caleb goes on to highlight that the way our politically correct society treats Jesus is very different to the gods of other religions.
“In our society we wouldn’t poke fun at Mohammed or Buddha or any other religious figure in history. And of course we know that Jesus is above all these leaders of other religions that have popped up on the planet over the last millennium.”
