Ashleigh Barty is set to join fellow grand slam champion Samantha Stosur as a three-time Newcombe Medallist on Monday night.
Barty is thought to be a shoo-in to collect the major gong for a third straight year at Australian tennis’ night of nights in Melbourne.
Last year, the 23-year-old shared the award with Alex De Minaur.
Barty is Australia’s first year-end world number one since Lleyton Hewitt in 2002 after winning the French Open, WTA Finals, and two other titles during a magical 2019 season.
Stosur, who won the “Newk” in 2010, 2011 and 2012, is the only other person to have won Australian tennis’s most prestigious individual award three times.
