A church leader in the UK has added his name to a statement calling for a world free of nuclear weapons.

Martin Fair, Moderator of the Church of Scotland says the General Assembly declares nuclear weapons to be an evil.

He says the Church is continuing to campaign for their removal and eventual eradication.

The statement, organised by the Christian Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, was released ahead of the 75th anniversary of the atomic bomb being dropped on Hiroshima.

Today (August 6) marks three-quarters of a century since the attack on the Japanese city, which instantly killed more than 100,000 people.

It has caused the death of countless others since as a result of radiation sickness.

Dr Fair has told Christian Today, it is right that those who follow the Prince of Peace should themselves work for peace.

The campaign statement calls on the UK Government to engage in international disarmament.
