More than three million Venezuelans – 10 per cent of the population – have left the country over the economic and political crisis, and the United Nations estimates that number could reach 5.3 million by the end of the year.
Bethany Christian Services says it’s the largest migration in the modern history of Latin America – and the vast number of migrants has so overwhelmed host nations that they, too, are experiencing economic strain.
The organisation’s Kristi Gleason has told Mission Network News, after meeting with the UN they set up a drop-in centre.
“It’s just a safe space for families. It provides a location for people to get a snack, access water, access the Internet so if they do have family in other parts of the country or the region they can email them,” says Ms Gleason.
She says pastors are often there to help them through counselling and prayer.
