New research in the UK is revealing the extent of the financial impact of COVID-19 on low-income families.

Christian Today reports, a study by the Child Poverty Action Group and the Church of England has found 80 per cent of low income families have been left worse off as a result of the pandemic.

Of the 285 families surveyed, more than 80 per cent said the pandemic had impacted their ability to buy food, and three-quarters reported that their payment of utilities was affected.

The ability to pay for housing and necessities for children was affected in about half of the families.

In response to the findings, CPAG and the Church of England are calling on the Government to raise child benefits by £10 a week, and extend free school meals to all families receiving universal credit or working tax credit.

Bishop of Durham Paul Butler says we all need to ask ourselves urgently how we can help our neighbour.
