A US marketing expert is no fan of people using smartphones in church – even if it’s to follow scripture.
He says it’s not only distracting to others, it can lead to checking texts and social media.
Professor Roberts is a member of Calvary Baptist Church – and a leading researcher on compulsive consumer behaviour.
He says smartphone overuse stimulates the brain like a chemical addiction. It can damage relationships and lives – in much the same way as alcohol and drugs.
He says the term “phubbing” instead of “snubbing” refers to people using their smartphones when with loved ones or friends – even God.
Mr Roberts says healthy relationships require presence – and cites Proverbs 4:25 “Look straight ahead and fix your eyes on what lies before you.”
He says that’s hard to do while gazing into a smartphone.
