The number of confirmed coronavirus cases around the world has passed 5 million.

World Health Organisation special envoy Dr David Nabarro says poor countries are being heavily impacted.

“People just experience extreme poverty when they’re asked to reduce economic activity so as to limit the spread of the virus. What we are going to see when the story of the pandemic is written is, this leads to increases in levels of poverty and malnutrition like we’ve not seen for many decades”, said Dr Nabarro.

The rate of new infections continue to rise in many countries with the death toll now over 300,000.
