Demand for food relief in Australia has risen by 47% on average during Covid-19.

Foodbank surveyed about 500 charities once a month between April and September to see how the pandemic had affected them.

One thousand Australians aged 18 and older who had experienced food insecurity in the past 12 months were also asked for their thoughts.

The survey found that despite changes to the welfare system and increased funding to emergency food relief charities, many were still struggling to put food on the table.

The pandemic has particular hit international students hard, who are ineligible to access Jobseeker or Jobkeeper payments.

69% of the charities also noted an increase in the number of newly unemployed people seeking food relief since the start of the pandemic.
