A new study has revealed how the pandemic has accentuated the problem of loneliness.

It found 40% of Australians saying they have never felt lonelier

One in four don’t have people they can regularly talk to.

Around half are too embarrassed to admit to being lonely.

Simon Smart from the Centre For Public Christianity who’s been researching the problem, told Vision Radio, it’s a serious health issue.

He says loneliness really does reduce your lifespan.

Mr Smart points to research indicating it can take 15 years off your life, or the equivalent of smoking 15 cigarettes a day.

He notes that cognitive issues, heart issues and other physical ailments are impacted by loneliness.

Adding that tells us something really important about how we’re made for relationships.

Mr Smart says society needs to realise that the best life is found in the service of other people.
