Learning how God designed the human brain reportedly helps us understand how to memorise Scripture.

Researcher in neuroscience and education, Jessie Cruickshank says memory is a complex function of how the brain processes each moment, situation, and relationship.

She explains that long-term memory banks are composed of both autobiographical memory, and semantic memory

According to Dr Cruickshank, the way most Christians approach Scripture memorisation involves using semantic memory, which has an extremely high rate of forgetfulness.

She told Christianity Today autobiographical memory has much more staying power as it is based on an encounter with God, rather than facts to retain.

To best memorise Scripture, the Word has to be experienced and embraced as living, active, and relational, to become a lasting part of our autobiographical memory.
