A Pakistani pastor has been sentenced to death for blasphemy.

58-year-old Zafar Bhatti is the nation’s longest-serving prisoner for the crime and the first to face execution.

The diabetic has been in prison for nearly 10 years.

He’s accused of insulting Islam in SMS text messages written in English, which he doesn’t speak.

The SIM card used to send the texts was not registered in his name.

The owner was a Muslim woman who was freed on bail and has since died.

Pastor Bhatti allegedly confessed under torture.

Before his arrest, he founded ‘Jesus World Mission’ to help the poor.

His wife believes he was targeted because many Muslims hated how quickly his church was growing.

Christian activists told the Vatican news agency Fides blasphemy laws are commonly misused against innocent people in Pakistan.
