Two French firefighters and a Spanish woman have died and nearly 50 people have been injured in a gas explosion that gutted the ground floor of a building in central Paris.
The accident occurred as central Paris was under security lockdown for a ninth consecutive Saturday of “yellow vest” protests.
French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said two firefighters died in the explosion, while Spanish Foreign Minister Josep Borrell said a Spanish woman was also killed.
“As firemen were looking for a gas leak in the building, a dramatic explosion took place,” Castaner said, adding that one of the firemen had been buried under debris for several hours.
Castaner said on his Twitter feed that 10 people, including one other firefighter, had serious injuries.
