Pope Francis’ popularity continues to be favourable among the majority of American Catholics, but a new survey reveals an increasing number think he is too liberal and naïve.
The survey – shows 84 percent still have a positive view of Francis – virtually identical to the first anniversary of his pontificate.
But the number of Americans who identify as Catholic hasn’t changed – and there’s no indication of a resurgence in Mass attendance.
Pew says there are also signs of growing discontent among Catholics on the political right – with those who says he’s too liberal more than doubling to 34% – and a quarter saying he is naïve – up 15% from 3 years ago.
Democrat support for the Pontiff remains virtually unchanged at 89 per cent – although fewer say he is a major change for the better.
