Outsourcing is being put on trial today – as the Transport Workers Union takes Qantas to court – for outsourcing TWO-thousand jobs.

The Federal Court case was brought by the TWU and renowned waterfront dispute lawyer Josh Bornstein, claiming the outsourcing was unlawful under the Fair Work Act.

T-W-U National Secretary Michael Kaine says Qantas wiped out its entire ground handling workforce and outsourced to workers on less wages and conditions.

”What we have seen across the last five or six years is GIG companies deliberately ‘misclassifying’ workers, putting them outside of the suite of protections that employees receive in this country, and the rsult of that is workers on poverty wages.”

Mr Kaine says it was hard to accept the loss of so many jobs when Qantas had received considerable financial assistance from the federal government during the pandemic.
